How to Create a Style Guide

There is only one way to stop this from happening and that is to create a style guide. Not only will a style guide help you conduct the reproduction of your logo – it will also help you extend your brand recognition – which many argue is one of the strongest selling tools.

Step 1 : Mark the audience for your Style Guide. Is this for staff to work in-house or is this for suppliers and contractors to refer to?

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most common question that is asked when buying a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, which stands for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most popular projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and types available, it can be challenging for customers to pick between those technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors give better image quality and colour accuracy. The article below tells you why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up the same grade of image quality.

It’s like a set of blinds in your house for your bedroom window. By a twist of a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. And that is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel operates like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is constructed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the pros like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point when the projector is turned on to when the picture reaches your screen is absolutely important for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels make the elements of the image by shining each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to create the projector image. Something important to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your projector screen all at once. The way a DLP projector works is very different and even how an image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to creating an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to construct the image elements. The elements of the image are sent in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then put together each coloured element of the image into the single full image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form top brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at a time, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some manufacturers have placed a white segment in the colour wheel to improve brightness generally, but this then detracts from colour accuracy.

I find in forums all the time that DLP provides a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be better quality. For those who are unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is capable of. DLP projectors do provide high contrast specifications in comparison to most LCD projectors. Initially, this can seem to be a plus, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room in which the projector is used. Do not be hoodwinked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you wish to project requires moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most common artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are projected. LCD projectors do not have this problem because every colour is sent simultaneously. DLP manufacturers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up artifacts, but the price of these projectors make them impractical for most businesses and consumers.

Another differentiation between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and remember when they taught you how the different colours of light refract various amounts when shone through the same lens. The downfall with DLP projectors is that they use the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are not the same and refract light in different ways. Generally with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will be projected above and a superfluous blue will come through below an image containing something as simple as a lone black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be adapted to take away these effects on the projected image, because each colour is refracted on a separate LCD panels.

The sole veritable benefit (excluding price) with going with a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to portability and cannot be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. If overall picture quality is important to you, then the answer is easy. Go for an LCD projector! LCD projectors will definitely make bright, colourful images with fewer image imperfections. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht became a leisure craft used first by royalty and later by the burghers for the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing was incidental, coming out of private challenges. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), built more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 wager. Yachting became popular for the affluent and aristocracy, but after that time the trend did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was instigated around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard organization, with large naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club endured, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after conglomerating with other clubs, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing began in some ordered manner on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to sovereignty in 1820, it was then called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the continued site of British yacht racing. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the rise of George IV. All members were required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for high bets were held, and the social life was wonderful. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English held dominance. Sailing was mostly for fun and found its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and established a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht group, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club while on board his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts were within the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the second half of the 19th century. The style of large yachts was initially largely affected by the success of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a association headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its win at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and built in today’s sense, with merely a model used. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the use of the research of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what it had earlier done for hulls.

Because nearly all sailboats had been individually built, there came a need for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were designed. Therefore, a rating rule was decreed, which resulted in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and revised in 1919. In modern times, one of the rapidly flourishing areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to the same specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for those boats can be had on an even par with no handicapping at all. A great example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on board for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting was done primarily for the nobility and the rich, expense was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The promotion and preference of smaller craft came in the later half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the value of smaller yachts. Following this in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure yachts became more popular, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, in which steam began to replace sail power in commercial vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed more and more in leisure yachts. Bigger power yachts were furthered to a high degree, and long-distance sailing turned into a favourite pastime of the wealthy. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then gave rise to those powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht fashion for many years. By the later half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were solely power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the design of large steam yachts. Conspicuous among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service during World War II.

As larger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were created, many bigger yachts were using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, was furthered in World War I. During the decade after, big power-yacht manufacture flourished, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that period the largest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of big power craft fell away after 1932, and the fashion thereafter was for smaller, less expensive boats. After World War II, many small naval craft were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting is a internationally beloved sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually sailing and keeping their own small pleasure craft. The amount of yachts and owners increased steadily, not only in the traditional locations on the seacoasts but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are distinguished by the effect they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind that applies the same relative requirement on all taxpayers—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income increase in equal scale. A progressive tax is characterizable by a more than proportional growth in the tax onus in relation to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional growth in the related liability. Therefore, progressive taxes are thought of as taking away the lack of equality in income distribution, while regressive taxes might have the result of increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are generally believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are initially progressive, however, might become less so within the upper-income demographic—in particular if a taxpayer is able to lower his tax base by nominating deductions or by excluding some particular income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income categories would also be more progressive if personal exemptions are claimed.

Income measured over the period of a year does not definitely provide the most accurate measure of taxpaying requirements. For example, transitory increases in income can be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer might decide to finance consumption by taking from savings. Ergo, if taxation is made comparable alongside “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than when it is held in comparison with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (except luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the portion of individual income consumed or spent on specific goods declines as the amount of personal income is raised. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), nominated as a standard amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is not easy to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally because of the uncertainty surrounding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of deciding who bears the tax burden lays essentially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.

In analysing the economic effect of taxation, it is essential to distinguish between several points of tax rates. The statutory rates will be nominated in law; usually these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates denote the fraction of incremental income demanded by taxation when income grows by one dollar. So, if tax burden grows by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislature usually contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income increases. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates need to regard provisions other than the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) decreases by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than specified by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates display how after-tax income increases or decreases in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the important ones for appraising incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to realise the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, since it may rely on factors such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates show the percentage of total income that is demanded in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for assessing the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates generally increase with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other hand, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households may dwarf these effects, forcing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that fall as income increases.
